French (A-Level)

Outline

You will explore the language, culture, history and society of France and other French-speaking countries and communities.

Topics include:

• Families and citizenship
• Youth trends and personal identity
• Education and employment opportunities
• Regional culture and heritage
• Media, art, film and music
• Migration and integration
• Cultural identity and marginalisation
• Cultural enrichment and celebrating difference
• Discrimination and diversity
• France from June 1940 to May 1945
• The cultural dimension of occupied France
• France from 1945–1950 through to the present day

Alongside your lessons, you will receive additional 1:1 speaking practice each week with a Foreign Language Assistant, giving you further opportunities to build your confidence, pronunciation and fluency.

The A Level French course has an excellent track record, with 100% pass rates and excellent high grades.

Progression

Studying French can open up opportunities at university, through degree apprenticeships and in careers where language skills, communication and international awareness are highly valued.

Potential career areas include international business and diplomacy, with opportunities in international marketing, import and export management, embassy work, international relations and global consultancy.

You could also progress into languages, education and media, including translation and interpreting, teaching and training, journalism, publishing, communications and public relations.

French can also complement careers in law, business, finance, tourism and hospitality, the Civil Service and wider public sector, as well as providing opportunities to study or work abroad.

Assessment

You will complete three examinations at the end of the two-year course:

Speaking
You will complete a topic card and an Independent Research Project.

Listening, Reading and Translation
You will demonstrate your ability to understand and respond to spoken and written French and translate between French and English.

Essay Writing
You will write critically about one French film and one French novel studied during the course.

Entry Requirements

A combination of 5 Grade 4’s and 5’s or above at GCSE (including maths and English). * One Vocational Qualification in a related subject area will be considered in place of a GCSE. Subject Specific Entry Requirements: GCSE English Language at Grade 5 and GCSE French at Grade 6.
