NEW Crime Journalism course coming to Pendleton in September 2021

This country is becoming more and more punitive. The prison population has risen by 69% in the last 30 years. It is vital crime gets reported in the right way as through this we can see what society is like and possibly where it is getting things wrong.
This year, at Pendleton Sixth Form College we are launching an exciting new crime journalism course. In this course you will research and write articles about criminal events for newspapers, magazines and television. You will also develop your own crime documentary where you will delve into some of the most notorious killers hoping to discover what drives them to commit unspeakable acts.
Through various interview techniques you will learn how to investigate both sides of each case to see how lives have been impacted and whether justice has been served.
During this course you will study:
- Journalist reporting
- Digital media skills in video, audio, print, publishing, and web
- Digital magazine production include genre, codes and conventions, content, layout and platforms
- Interviewing techniques including journalistic context, questioning, styling and structure
- Writing copy, exploring text from a range of media sectors, looking at style, content and delivery
- How to gather information from primary and secondary sources, target audience and planning content
- Page layout design for digital media exploring common principles of layout design, differences between printed and digital layout outcomes.
- Working with text, images/ graphics, and colour
- How to respond to a brief
Entry Requirements
Students will need three Grade 5s and three Grade 4s including a Grade 5 in GCSE (or equivalent) English. They should also have a broad range of GCSEs 9-4 (A*-C), including good grades in the relevant subjects.
Progression
The skills you will learn from this course will enable you to: Pursue a career in print journalism, broadcast journalism, as a press officer, in public relations, marketing or publishing. Progress on to employment or a relevant university degree.
